Anthony Mackie to Star as Falcon in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’

The first black superhero in mainstream comics will join force with Captain America in Joe and Anthony Russo‘s sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier. THR reports that rising star Anthony Mackie is in talks to take on the role of Sam Wilson, a.k.a. Falcon.

Wilson was introduced in 1969 in Captain America #117. Seeking to use a young, idealistic Wilson as a pawn, Red Skull uses the Cosmic Cube to give him telepathic power with birds as well as the ability to fly. Wilson eventually becomes Captain America’s crime-fighting partner and helps him defeat the Red Skull.

As for how the character will fit the current movie narrative, Marvel is keeping plot details secret but the official title suggests that Captain America’s sidekick Bucky will be brought back from the dead as a brain-washed Russian assassin.

At any rate, this is a big move for Mackie and likely his most prominent role to date. While he has proven to be terrific in movies such as The Hurt Locker, The Adjustment Bureau and Half-Nelson, a major role in a Marvel film will do wonder for his star. Mackie will next be seen in the star-studded crime thriller Gangster Squad. He is currently filming Brad Furman‘s gambling drama Runner Runner alongside Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set for a April 4, 2014 release date.

This sounds great. What’s interesting to me is the early April date in 2014 for this. Looks like Marvel/Disney is looking to expand the summer movie season now into April. Great heads up, Castor.

Yea, I’m surprised they would release it in April but as we have seen with The Hunger Games, you can still bank coins during that month. But I would think the studio will move the movie to a proper summer release date, once we get closer.

  2. I’ll be interested just as long as it retains some of the nostalgia elements of the first film and features a cameo from one of the Avengers. Hopefully the Hulk.

I’m more interested to find out when this movie will be set. Especially if Bucky’s meant to be back…
