Bilbo Baggins & Gandalf The Grey on the Cover of Entertainment Weekly
As we are slowly inching closer to the release date for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, Entertainment Weekly is featuring Bilbo (Martin Freeman) and Gandalf (Ian McKellen) on the cover of their annual Comic Con issue. Also check out a big batch of new pics that give us a closer look at all the main characters.
In a preview of the interview inside the magazine, Jackson explains that he added characters not present from J.R.R Tolkien’s original work: “In the movie we want these characters to have story lines and a little more substance than they do in the book,” Jackson explains. “Almost everything we’re doing is from Tolkien somewhere, whether it’s in the book or the subsequent development that wasn’t published in The Hobbit itself.”
Check out the pics below and let us know what you think! The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will land on December 14, 2012 while The Hobbit: There and Back Again will arrive on December 13, 2013.

Is it time yet? Going to be very jealous of those lucky souls going to SDCC!
I know Jaina! I wish I had gone this year, The Hobbit and Man of Steel is gonna be on the same panel, oh dear!! Henry Cavill & Richard Armitage in the same room, I might spontaneously combust so it’s probably best I’m not going
Look it’s my other husband, Martin Freeman. God I am so excited for this!!
I think this movie and TDKR really don’t need to do any promotions anymore. I mean really, who DOESN’T want to see this movie?
I know there is a great deal of make-up involved in these movies, but Cate Blanchett continues to get more and more beautiful as she ages.
Love that they’re maintaining the visual continuity between this movie and the LotR films– not that I’m surprised, based on the trailer we’ve seen, but they look nearly identical. Great stuff.
Gollum looks great. My precious!!!!!
Great pics! Have they made Gollum look a little younger?
That’s what I was thinking – he looks like he has fewer wrinkles in the face, haha.
Funny I got my copy of EW earlier today and just finished reading the full article. Peter Jackson really didn’t want to direct The Hobbit, he said he wanted a new voice for this film and when Del Toro left the project, he had no choice but to do it himself.
Can’t wait to see this movie.
Glad PJ ended up working on it. I love LOTR because it was his vision, so if it ain’t broke why fix it?
Great pics…after the somewhat disappointing “big” movies this year (Prometheus, Men In Black III) I’m hoping, and expecting, The Hobbit and The Dark Knight to deliver.
Love the pictures of Martin Freeman . . . he’s going to be a great Bilbo, I think! And the barrel picture looks awesome.
I’m wondering where “this other material that is Tolkein’s” is going to come from, if not from The Hobbit. Tolkein does have quite a few books out there.
Looking forward to this film. Love Martin Freeman!
