‘The Dark Knight Rises’: What Did You Think? [Negative Comments Strictly Forbidden]

It’s finally here and given the built-up anticipation, dozens of thousands of die-hard moviegoers will already have seen The Dark Knight Rises by the time this post is published. For those of you lucky enough to already have seen the movie, time to sound off in the comments!

But what did YOU think? Was it better or worse than you anticipated? What did you like and dislike? Tell us all about it in the comments and feel free to post your own review or link!

As for those of us who haven’t seen The Dark Knight Rises, what are your plans for the weekend? Were you able to sleep last night? Again, tell us how you feel about the release of the film!

I think it goes without saying but *****SPOILERS******

I really liked it. I will have a review up later today, but my initial reaction is an A-/B+.

I keep saying it, but what really helped save this movie was the final hour. This movie was just so damn epic. I didn’t have as big of a problem with the story as some critics did, although I’m sure problems will make themselves more apparent with repeat viewings like The Dark Knight.

Honestly, my biggest problem with the film was the inability to hear every line of dialogue. I know they reworked Bane’s voice quite a bit, and for the most part I liked it, but there were times where I still couldn’t understand him. But there were other times where I couldn’t hear the dialogue from other characters as well.

And oh man, Marion. My sweet Marion. When she signed on, we all thought “Oh sweet, Talia is gonna be in this!”. And then when she came out a few months ago and said that Talia wasn’t going to be in this and that she was merely a love interest in Wayne, I naively believed her. I did figure that she was the citizen with the trigger as soon as Batman and Bane took the fighting indoors, but I thought they did the Talia switch magnificently, especially with the way the set up the Bane/pit flashbacks.

Another thing that bothered me was how the bomb was so “unstable”, and yet Bats was firing upon it, made it crash, and hit the bomb on several objects as if it was nothing. Maybe I’m an idiot that doesn’t know what he’s talking about (which is likely, especially after the way they went out of their way to have the bomb bump into things).

That score was brilliant, but I think that was expected.

I thought Hathaway did more than hold up her end.

I really liked how most of the characters moved from “sometimes people need something other than the truth” to “okay, maybe the truth was what they really needed.”

I can’t wait to watch this on IMAX.

The whole Cotillard thing……that’s where my complete naivety of the “Batman” comics helps me. I had NO idea that was coming. It was kinda cool.

    • Castor says:

Yea I absolutely loved that it was completely unexpected for me as far as Cotillard’s character is concerned.

As for the bomb being “unstable”. I’m no nuclear physicist but the meaning of “unstable” in physics/chemistry isn’t exactly the same as your everyday “unstable”. Basically, you have controlled (ie. stable) nuclear reaction like they do at nuclear power plant and unstable ones like atomic bombs going off, the Sun etc where enormous amount of energy is released in an instant…

I thought it was great, no spoilers from me but I had some issues with the script. Other than that, I thought it was as good as I expected it to be. See it on IMAX, the real one if you can. Don’t waste your money on the so called IMAX at AMC theaters.

    • Castor says:

We got free tickets to AMC so we were going to go for the most expensive showing they got (ie. the fake IMAX at AMC lol)

      • Ted S. says:

Ah yeah, you can’t turn down free tickets then. Ha ha.

Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did, if you can, go see it on the real IMAX screen for the second time. :)

  3. I’ll be watching it on Sunday.

  4. Gibbs says:

It’s incredibly sad that the cinematic event of the summer has to be tempered by the act of one psycho :(

  5. Branden says:

No negative comments? Then, I will plead the fifth.

    • Red Georges says:

He was joking, poking fun at the commenters of Rotten Tomatoes.

      Have at it.

      • Branden says:

When I walked into the movie, I thought I was going to like the movie. I was very disappointed with it. That opening was WTF. I hated Bane’s bad Sean Connery impression. The movie was a mess.

I did enjoy Selina Kyle and a good 30 minutes of the movie.

People are pointing out the problems with the film, but are still giving it glowing praise. I don’t get it.

That ending was a huge F U to the audience. I was pissed off at the end of it.

  6. Nick Prigge says:

Am I the only one who wanted a whole lot more Anne Hathaway?

  7. ruth says:

Just a few more hours until I get to see this at IMAX! Yay! Oh look at how cute Bale’s smile is… w/ a cane no less, I just want to run over and hug him ;)

  8. Jaina says:

I LOVED this film. And not just saying it. Itching to see it for a second time. Seriously.

    • Castor says:

Same feeling Jaina. I really didn’t expect to be blown away by this movie but that’s exactly what Chris Nolan was able to do. I LOVED this movie so much!!!!!!!!!!!! Can’t wait to check it out again and again.

  9. So, is Nolan going to a Nightwing trilogy now?

  10. 3guys1movie says:

I thought it was good but not great. Strangely, for a Nolan film it seemed to have giant plot holes and inconsistancies. This seemed to me to be the weakest of the three films.

I was really impressed by Hathaway’s performance. I was all set to hate on her but she was great. I also enjoyed JGL but would have been happy to ditch the whole boys town story line. I would also have been happy to leave Matthew Modine on the cutting room floor.

I thought the last ten minutes were the best part of the film. I only wish the rest of the film was as well done. I walked out satified, but I certainly was not thinking of hopping back in for a second viewing.

Strangely, this made me think maybe I was a bit harsh to that Spider-Man reboot.

  11. Novroz says:

My thought is EXACTLY like you, it’s a good movie not great. There are too much non sense and plot holes that made me a bit disappointed with Jonathan Nolan. He can make something better than that.

Out of 3 movies I reviewed this week, TDKR got the lowest rating.

  12. Ross Carey says:

The film makes a remarkable comment on suffering in the age of economic downturn and the humbling effects of recession. Also, on terrorism!
Having seen it twice, the film certainly did not let me down.

  13. Andrew says:

    I think it’s aggressively stupid.

I also think it’s the only Batman film out of Nolan’s trilogy that really lets go and has fun with the pulp roots of the character. He spends the rest of the series trying to make the story feel as un-comic bookish as possible, which is fine; there’s more than one to approach Batman, after all, and he does it in the way he understands. But between the Bat, the action scenes, and the introduction of Selina Kyle, Rises really gets its hands dirty with fun, engaging action that at least attempts to divorce itself from the sense of realism Nolan strives for in these films.

The problem, though– and I’m not saying one is really related to the other at all– is that Nolan forgot to make a Chris Nolan film in the process. Thematically, this thing is a huge dud. Sure, it tries to go there with its questions of class strife, but everything about those sentiments rings hollow or just plain feels confused. And that’s really my biggest problem with the film. All of the stuff that makes the other Nolan-directed Batman films so interesting gets short-changed here; the political stuff feels either dopey or muddled, and structurally it’s kind of messy.

Dug Bale and Hathaway, both together and separate– they’ve got great chemistry– and Hardy from a physical standpoint. Bane’s voice does sound completely ridiculous, though, and it’s only thanks to Hardy’s physical performance that Bane feels intimidating at all. Shamefully, Cotillard feels underused, but Nolan gets a ton of mileage out of JGL and Cane.

  14. I’d join in, but I’m TDKR’ed out. LOL

I didnt like it as much as most people, let’s just say that.
