Michael Fassbender in Talks to Join Natalie Portman in Western ‘Jane Got a Gun’

Director Lynne Ramsay blew a lot of people away with last year’s We Need to Talk About Kevin and it looks like that was just a warmup for her next project, the western Jane Got a Gun. Back in May, we reported that Natalie Portman would star as a woman whose outlaw husband returns home badly wounded after his gang turns on him. She has to reach out to an ex-lover to defend her farm from the baddies trying to finish the job.

Vulture now reports the omnipresent Michael Fassbender is in talks to co-star as the ex-lover. This is certainly exciting news as Portman and Fassbender would make for an handsomely cool duo and having a female protagonist would be a welcome twist to the genre. Brian Duffield wrote the script which landed on the 2011 Black List .

Of course, this is no lock yet as Fassbender is one of the busiest man in Hollywood. He will next be seen in Steve McQueen’s Twelve Years a Slave and he is currently shooting Ridley Scott’s drama The Counselor.

Production for the indie western is tentatively set to begin early next year if things align just right. The budget for the film will reportedly be around $20 million with Portman also producing.

What do you think?

Interesting project, and I do like the idea of Portman taking the lead in a Western. I like most of all the fact that this is such a jump in material from Kevin; I’m curious to see what Ramsey can do out west.

  2. Having Michael Fassbender in a Lynne Ramsay western with Natalie Portman just makes me more excited about this film.

This guy’s career is on fire… as it should! Well, this would be the second Western he’ll be doing after the awful Jonah Hex then, yeah I think he’d be good in this.
