Michael Keaton Replaces Hugh Laurie as Villain in ‘RoboCop’ Reboot

Director Jose Padilha has found a worthy replacement to play the villain in his reboot of RoboCop after Hugh Laurie’s (House, M.D.) unexpected departure. With the movie about to start filming, Deadline reports that Michael Keaton will take on the role of Raymond Sellars, the CEO of Omnicorp, the corporation behind the genesis of RoboCop.

“Michael is the final addition to the amazing cast we have assembled for this film and it is so great to have the last puzzle piece in place,” the director said in a press statement. “It is thrilling that everything has come together to bring this innovative new vision of RoboCop to life. We’ve got a great script, a great cast, some killer ED-209’s and I can’t wait to get Alex Murphy back on the streets.”

It remains to be seen whether the movie will be as “killer” as Paul Verhoeven 1987 classic. We do know that Joel Kinnaman will star as the titular character with Hollywood veterans Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman and Abbie Cornish also part of the cast.

Keaton was last seen on the big screen in the 2010 comedy The Other Guys so it will be a treat to see him back in front of the camera. Production is set to start imminently for a scheduled release date of August 9th, 2013.

What do you think of this casting bit?
