Now Out in Theaters: 8/3/12

Not a very deep week for new theatrical releases, but if you are a fan of Collin Farrell or lots of action, it doesn’t really matter.

Total Recall

I’ve been surprised by how many people actually want to watch this. The older version with Arnold is considered a classic, and remakes of such movies are usually met with a storm of upset fans, but that doesn’t appear to be the case with this one. The trailer has promised plenty of action, so I’m sure that has something to do with it. For me, Collin Farrell has been on a roll ever since Alexander and I’ll buy a ticket to just about any movie that he comes out with. It also doesn’t hurt having Kate Beckinsale hunting him down the entire movie, and her husband Len Wiseman directing. Wiseman directed the first two Underworld movies and Live Free or Die Hard, all which of very enjoyable in my book. A movie I will be checking out opening weekend.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days

I never really got into this series. I gave the first one a shot, but wasn’t a fan so I didn’t even bother with the second one. The previous two have earned $75 million worldwide with a production budget of $15 million/$21 million, respectively, so it’s easy money for Fox. This one was made for $22 million, and doesn’t have much to compete with when it comes to the family dollar. Anybody out there checking this one out?

Limited Release: Celeste and Jesse Forever

Rashida Jones has been a star on the rise the past couple years, and it’s only a matter of time before she becomes a household name. Along with being the writer, Jones stars in this film about a young married couple who have to decide whether they should split up or not. We’ve seen it a million times before, but the humor brought to the table by both Jones and Andy Samberg promises to help separate this film from the rest of the bunch. I think this one has plenty of potential, and something I will be watching as soon as it opens in Nebraska.

What will you be watching this weekend? Are you excited for Total Recall, or possibly skipping it because it won’t match up to Arnold’s?

  1. I’m staying home because I have a morning doctor’s appointment tomorrow and I’m just not interested in seeing any of those films although I don’t mind those Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies. I kinda like ‘em.

I’m a big fan of Rashida Jones so I will probably check out Celeste and Jesse Forever at some point. Might just wait for a rental, though.

I’m one of those few people who don’t recall much of the original and I like what I saw at Comic-con last year, so I did see Total Recall yesterday. It’s not terrible but not exactly memorable either.
