‘Super’ Director James Gunn in Talks to Direct Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

Marvel’s movie adaptation of their 2008 comic book series Guardians of the Galaxy is ramping up toward production as Heat Vision reports that Super director James Gunn is now in talks to direct the ambitious project.

Anyone remotely familiar with the material can imagine how difficult it will be to pull off a Guardians of the Galaxy movie. We already know that the Guardians will be composed of Drax The Destroyer, a human resurrected as a super warrior whose sole purpose in life is hunting down Thanos (the purple villain in the Avengers final scene tease); Groot, a plant monster who can regenerate by absorbing wood; Star-Lord, a gun-toting half-human/half-alien inter-galactic vigilante; Gamora, the last survivor of her species who becomes Thanos’ adopted daughter but now has turned against him. Oh there is Rocket Raccoon, a genetically engineered animal who is a fantastic marksman and a great pilot.

Yep.

The plan is to have these characters appear in The Avengers 2 so while it’s almost impossible to imagine these characters outside of an animation, the studio is going the live-action road (with heavy use of CGI I presume).

It’s interesting to note that Gunn has absolutely no experience directing large scale productions and that he is mostly known for his quirky and offbeat (if not randomly awkward) sense of humor. Screenwriter Chris McCoy has recently been hired to rewrite the existing script by Nicole Perlman

Marvel plans to release Guardians of the Galaxy on Aug. 1, 2014 so it’s likely that we will learn a lot more about this project in the coming months. Stay tuned!

What do you think?

Given Gunn’s involvement, I’ve got high hopes.
