Gina Carano to Star in Female Spinoff of ‘The Expendables’
After proving her ass-kicking chops in Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire earlier this year, Gina Carano will now get a chance to headline the untitled female spin-off of The Expendables. Variety reports that Dutch Southern has written the script and several unnamed actresses are also in negotiations.
Producer Adi Shankar said of the casting: “I don’t know how I’m supposed to make a movie that is supposed to be the female version of ‘The Expendables’ without Gina Carano in it. It would be like making Twix without caramel or Jamba Juice without jamba,” he said.
This is a solid start in terms of the cast and it will be interesting to see who comes on board in the coming weeks. The main appeal of The Expendables franchise is obviously the cast of legendary action stars who rose to fame over the past three decades. So will the Kate Beckinsale, Milla Jovovich and Sigourney Weavers of the world, please stand up? Stay tuned.
Meanwhile, Carano is keeping busy as she is set to appear in the upcoming Fast & Furious 6 movie and will also star in the actioner In The Blood.
What do you think?

As long as Gina isn’t called on to “act” and simply goes around kicking butt, she’ll be well suited to the role. But really…a female version of The Expendables…it is the silliest idea I’ve heard all year.
What? Why do the men get to do one but not the ladies? How is it more silly?
I still haven’t seen haywire yet but I am digging the fact that a female Expendables is in the works.
Haywire was a bit of a Soderbergh mess and the story is pretty freaking terrible but Gina Carano does kicks ass in it.
Ahah, it’s only a matter of time the females version of Expendables comes out but yeah she definitely needs to lead the pack! Angelina Jolies and similar twigs need not apply. I’d like to see Michelle Yeoh in the group though
What? I want Angie in this!
I think Jolie would have to bulk up a bit considering how skinney she looked at the Oscars, but yes i would support her inclusion too
Gina can kick my ass any day as long as she keep her nice round figure intact. Of course I’ll see this movie with her in it.
I’m sure she will. She isn’t the type to go rail thin for Hollywood, I would think
I might be totally sexist here (against my own gender?!) but what is the point of this? The whole point of the Expendables was to have these great action film actors from past come together in one big action film to top all action films. Seeing stars like Stallone, Willis, Arnhult, Van Damme, in one film altogether is amazing.
Sorry, just don’t see the appeal of a load of female action heroes doing something similar.
You are right Jaina. They should do an equivalent but for romantic movie heroines. Picture Katherine Heigl, Kate Hudson, Meg Ryan, Amanda Seyfried, and the whole pack in one movie. I’m sure it will be a lot more appealing to you… Lol
Katherine Heigl? Do people still pay money to see her act?
Personally, I’m all for this one! I loved “Haywire” and Gina does kick ass! Ane BTW- at my own site, I cast the film, and my female partner in crime…well, she kicks my ass!
But yes, Michele Yeoh HAS to be in this film!
Gina? She hasn’t proved her ass kicking chops, she has only just begun. Many, many others deserve the lead. But hey, I’m only an audience member, and female, and demand casting and stories to make sense. What the hell is my problem?
I’m down with this. I had a lot of fun watching Carano kick ass in Haywire.
Carano’s legit. I just don’t know if there are enough viable action heroines out there today that can easily stand up or next to her in a fight scene or shootout.
