Steven Spielberg is Eyeing Ben Whishaw to Star in ‘Robopocalypse’

With Lincoln yet to hit theaters, Steven Spielberg is already gearing up for his next movie, the sci-fi Robopocalypse. Adapted from Daniel H. Wilson novel, the pic will take place in the near-future as a self-aware artificial intelligence known as Archos comes online and takes control over the global network of robots that regulates every aspect of everyday life.

We already know that Chris Hemsworth is set to star with Anne Hathaway circling the role of the female lead. Variety now reports that Ben Whishaw is being eyed by Spielberg to take on the role of a hacker named Lurker (oy). The rising star is mostly known for his role in the super-weird flick Perfume: The Story of a Murderer as well as his acclaimed turn in 2009′s Bright Star alongside Abbie Cornish. However, he is set to appear as the new Q in the new James Bond movie, Skyfall, as well as the much intriguing adaptation of Cloud Atlas.

The science-fiction premise of the movie certainly sounds like a lot of fun as everyone loves a good robot war. Let’s just hope this doesn’t turn into the terribly disappointing I-Robot. Steven Spielberg has directed some of the greatest blockbusters in Film history but let’s face it, he hasn’t been nearly as successful as of late. Let’s hope he gets back on track with Lincoln and then Robopocalypse.

Cabin in the Woods director and writer Drew Goddard is behind the screenplay and production is set to star next year for a tentative release date of April 25, 2014.

Oooh ye! Love Whishaw and it’s about time he gets big roles. Robopocalypse does sound like fun.

I heard something about Hathaway being in it too, if she will that will be fun to watch! Though the premise sounds a lot like Pacific Rim to me.

  4. Yay FD points. I’ve been hoping he would get cast for something ;)

The book was quite entertaining so hopefully Spielberg can make it even more fun for the film version. I agree that Spielberg hasn’t done anything good in a while, I feel asleep a few times while watching War Horse and decided to skip Tin Tin.

  6. Castor says:

Tintin was pretty good although nothing particularly incredible. I didn’t see War Horse though.

  7. Pete says:

I heard he’s going to be playing Lurker so he’s getting typecast as a computer whiz after this and being the new Q.
