Charlize Theron to Star in US Remake of ‘Sympathy for Lady Vengeance’
with Oscar-winning scribe William Monahan (The Departed) set to adapt the original.
We now have word that Charlize Theron will star in the remake as well as produce via her Denver & Deliah Films banner. The original centered on a woman who is released from prison after serving a sentence for a murder she didn’t commit. She hunts down the real killer intent to avenge the dead.
“This will be very American – and very unexpected,” says Monahan. “Park is a genius; it’s the Everest of adaptations and I’ve got blood in my teeth to do it.”
Needless to say, Theron is an excellent choice for the role and there is a lot of potential from the original material. The actress recently finished shooting Mad Max: Fury Road but there is no word on when this will start rolling at the moment.

Yet another remake?? Chan-wook Park has been all over the news lately. I like Charlize but not sure about this one just yet.
Maybe they will remake the entire trilogy. Might as well at this point…
I wonder: will the Vengeance trilogy eventually be remade in its entirety? Seems like people just want to scalp the hell out of his best work. I don’t know if that bothers me much or not– I’ll always have the original films– but it seems odd that this is happening now when the Oldboy remake only recently got some traction.
Either way Charlize would make a great Geum-ja, even if she doesn’t have that natural sort of matronly stance. I’m sure she can adopt it.
Yea I think that’s pretty much on the nose, casting wise. I don’t think Lady Vengeance or Mr Vengeance are anything near as masterful as Oldboy so I don’t really mind the remaking of these…
As long as they’re not remaking JSA at the US/Mexico border, I’m fine with Hollywood gobbling up Park’s Korean stuff. Because remaking JSA in that setting would be idiotic.
Can people not come up with there own revenge stories anymore?

That would be a 100 times more original then most of what Hollywood is putting out at this point

Gutted and pleased at the same time. It will be nice for people to ignorant to watch the original to be able to enjoy the story
Yea especially outside of Oldboy, not that many people are familiar with Park’s other films.
