First Look at ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ & ‘There and Back Again’

With Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey about to hit theaters next week, Entertainment Weekly has managed to get exclusive first looks at the next two chapters of the trilogy. First off is a still from next year’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in which Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) is laying on top of Smaug’s gold pile.

The second picture features Bard the Bowman (Luke Evans) and Legolas (Orlando Bloom) having a chat. As you may already know, Legolas is never mentioned in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit so it will be interesting to see whether the character has any significance in the films.

still can’t accept the fact that this thin book is turned into a trilogy… shame on the producers who just want more money!

Yea it’s really overkill. I’m not surprised that early reviews have been mixed and critical of how bloated the first movie is. What could they have possibly done but use filler scenes to extend this into three movies??

…totally agree. I fear this decision to split the story into three parts will mean a drop in quality…

Obviously not alone in my criticism of the book being stretched out into three films. Maybe two if you really wanted to go there. But three – I just don’t get it unless there are insertions that were not in the source material.

This seems weirdly premature given that the first movie hasn’t even hit theaters yet. And, honestly, it’s kinda skinny regardless. Just a strange move. Wait until the hype is at its peak and then release this, says I.

Also, re: the thinness of the book. It’s actually fine. The movie basically ends around chapter six in the novel, which is roughly one third of the whole story. You can credit that paced-out result to Tolkien’s writing, which can really be expanded on visually, and to the material brought in from the Appendices.

He better not have Legolas be the one who fells Smaug. That is all. LOL
