Watch: First Trailer for Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Oblivion’ Starring Tom Cruise
Universal has released the first trailer for Joseph Kosinski’s (Tron Legacy) science-fiction film Oblivion. Tom Cruise stars as a lone soldier who lives in the clouds above a post-apocalyptic Earth after a war made the surface uninhabitable. He works diligently to repair drones that seek out and destroy hostile aliens that have all but wiped out humanity. When he encounters a crashed space pod with a mysterious woman survivor (Olga Kurylenko), she makes him question everything he knows.
The trailer features some truly stunning visuals and this seems like an interesting sci-fi concept to base a film on. However, I feel this is a badly put together preview that’s too vague and confusing and doesn’t clearly lay down what the movie is about.
Check it out for yourself below or click over to Apple for HD. Oblivion also stars Andrea Riseborough, Morgan Freeman and Melissa Leo. It opens on April 12.
Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

It’s Wall-E meets Solaris, let’s just hope it doesn’t end like Vanilla Sky. It will sure look pretty on the big IMAX screen.

I do generally like these post-apocalyptic films. We seem to have had quite a few over recent years.
Yea me too. Sadly they generally under-delived (I Am Legend…)
The big hurdle for me with this is Kosinski. One trailer does go a long way toward making me feel more intrigued to see the movie, but the film itself is going to have to do a LOT of legwork to wash the taste of Tron: Legacy out of my mouth. Yech.
Please sir, there was no need to bring Tron Legacy into the room.
That was more or less my reaction after watching it two years ago.
Hi, Castor and company:
‘Oblivion’ looks like a whole lot of CGI sizzle with very little steak attached.
I also understand that the heart of good to great Sci~Fi is too many questions and not enough answers. In the case of ‘Oblivion’. The answers don’t seem worthy of the journey to find answers.
Oops.
The last sentence should read:
The questions don’t seem worthy of the journey to find the answers.
Sorry for any confusion.
Need coffee.
