Hayley Atwell Will Not Return for ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’
As Marvel continues to review its (appealing) options for the female lead in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, we have learned that Steve Rogers’ primary love interest will not return in the sequel. Hayley Atwell revealed to TimeOut London that Peggy Carter will not appear in the upcoming film.
Based on the fact that Captain America: The Winter Soldier will take place in the present, it’s probably a smart move on Marvel’s behalf to not bring the character back. It would have been completely out of character for Captain America to fall in love all over again with a senile octogenarian (or would have it been?).
The Avengers revealed that Peggy Carter is still alive in the present day and along with the fact that Atwell previously refused to elaborate on her involvement in the sequel, fueled speculations that she would return possibly as Peggy’s niece, Sharon.
Meanwhile, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is gearing up to start shooting in March so expect to hear more about the film’s casting. Jessica Brown Findlay, Emilia Clarke, Teresa Palmer, Imogen Poots, and Alison Brie have reportedly tested for the female lead and names such as Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Felicity Jones have also be thrown around for the part.
Whoever is cast, let’s hope this movie is loads better than the completely underwhelming and forgettable first installment… Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens on April 4, 2014.

Oh no! I really loved her in the first one
Same here. Although I wouldn’t mind if it’s someone like Vanessa Redgrave or Maggie Smith playing Peggy.
It would be beyond odd and just plain silly if they had her playing Peggy’s niece. Did really like her in the first film (the cast was one of the best things about the film.) but I’d like to see someone like Alison Brie take up this role. Saw with Cobie Smulders that comedy actresses can do great in these sort of films.
I still want a scene of Steve meeting older Peggy again, damn it!
Bummer! I think out of the Marvel girls, she’s my favorites! Plus she looks good in that 40s uniform
I like her in the role, but it would be a bit much to bring her into it. This is a wise choice. Though a tough one to make, I’m sure. This means no new flashbacks, nothing.
Crap – I liked her as an actress; Felicity Jones or Jessica Brown Findlay would be nice subs.
I like the possibility of Jessica Brown Findlay being in AN Avengers cast because she reminds me of Scarlett Johannson for some reason.
Bummer.
LOL
