Paul Giamatti in Talks to Play Rhino in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′; Felicity Jones Circling Role
A surprising casting bit out of Marvel today as Heat Vision reports that Paul Giamatti is slated to star as Rhino in the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2. As much as I enjoy watching Giamatti for his acting prowess, he doesn’t exactly strike me as fit to play a physically imposing character known for his supernatural speed and strength.
While it’s doubtful that the actor would be able to physically bulk up for the role, it would be worth the price admission alone and quite more entertaining than the entire first film. Jokes aside, Giamatti joins a truly impressive cast that already includes Shailene Woodley, Jamie Foxx as well as returning stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.
From the comics standpoint, Rhino has been a longstanding character first appearing in the 60s as a Russian thug who would don a superhuman suit that made him extremely strong, fast and invulnerable. More interestingly, the character has become an ally of Spider-Man in more recent years, opening the door for something similar in the upcoming film since Foxx is already taking on the role of the main protagonist, Electro.
Additionally, word is out that Felicity Jones (Like Crazy) is circling an unknown female role. Let’s hope this isn’t going down the path of Spider-Man 3 which was a hot mess of too many characters. Production is set to begin next month for a May 2, 2014 release.
What do you think?

…any time I hear Paul Giamatti has been cast in a film is a moment to rejoice!
Yeah, not so sure about this one. I love Giamatti, but as the Rhino?
Actually I guess my misgivings begin with even using the Rhino as a big screen villain. A dude in a sup’ed up Rhino suit? Then again, a dude in spandex with spider powers sounds equally ridiculous on paper, so I await to be proven wrong.
BTW, where’s that image of the Rhino from?
I’m curious to see what they do with this even more now.
@ J Ibanez, the image for Rhino comes from The Amazing Spider-Man videogame. You can see it here, along with a trailer that revolves around Rhino. (fun game)

Thanks!
Usually I’m happy to hear about Giamatti being cast in anything, but there’s a first time for everything. I hope this is a joke. Giamatti has much better things to be doing with his time than starring in the sequel to one of the worst examples of studio hack-work in recent memory.
Did they not learn anything from the Spiderman 3 debacle?
