Movie Review: Hey, Hey It’s Esther Blueburger (2008)
Directed by Cathy Randall, Hey, Hey It’s Esther Blueburger is a wonderful coming-of-age comedy from Australia that you can’t help but love, even if the movie is far from perfect. The story isn’t all that fresh, as is the case with most coming-of-age stories, but the witty dialogue and excellent visuals help separate it from the rest of the pack and put it on a level just a rung lower than similar movies like Juno and Mean Girls, which this movie was certainly influenced by.
Guillermo del Toro Leaves The Hobbit
Breaking news from TheOneRing.net, the essential website for avid Lord of the Rings fan, that Guillermo del Toro is stepping down as director of The Hobbit. Guillermo stated that he will stay on with the project as a co-writer until they get the final draft done, but can no longer make the commitment of being the director of a project that keeps getting postponed.
Greatest Comedy of All-Time Tournament
Ever get in an argument with a friend, or even better a complete stranger, about which is better of two certain movies? Do you go for just laughs? A well rounded movie that made you smile and laugh? Dark humor? Everyone has there preference, and that’s one of the more enjoyable things about movies is hearing everybody’s perspective on a movie. But every once in a while, people reach a consensus that helps establish one or two movies that rise above the rest.
MSOD: The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
I’ll give you this little piece of heaven from Regina Spektor, whom I consider probably the best songwriter/singer who contributes to movie soundtracks. 18 credits in a span of 5 years, and continuing to put out music that fits scenes perfectly, I would say that she is doing very well for herself. I kind of wanted to post one of the songs from (500) Days of Summer
Since All The Cool Kids Are Doing It…
Anomalous Material has yet again been tagged in a meme, this time by Univarn from Life in Equinox. For any newcomers to the meme game, once a person tags you (dang you, Univarn!!), you must reply to the same seven questions with answers of your own. And if you don’t, giant Graboids will burst through your floor and demolish you. And since I don’t have Kevin Bacon at my disposal, I think I’ll just answer the questions.
Movie Review: Kick-Ass (2010)
Dark humor and satire permeates the very fabric of Kick Ass and this where it diverges from every comic book movie that came before it. We are never really sure at any point in time whether things should be taken with a grain of salt or not. This is a movie about superheroes where no one has superpowers.
Movie Review: Greenberg (2010)
Much like his previous movies, Greenberg is another character study written and directed by Noah Baumbach. The film’s focus is on Roger Greenberg (Ben Stiller), a 40 year old New Yorker who recently had a mental breakdown and is brought out west to California by his brother Phillip to care for his dog while the family takes a vacation to Vietnam. What should have been another fascinating look at real life characters quickly turns into a story that becomes very uninteresting because of a very poorly written central personality that you can’t help but dislike, if not hate.
Movie Review: The Ghost Writer (2010)
The Ghost Writer, directed by the legendary Roman Polanski, is a mystery thriller that follows the story of a writer brought on to finish the memoirs of a former British Prime Minister (Pierce Brosnan) who is buried in controversy. Ewan McGregor plays the titular character of “The Ghost”, as he is secretly hired to complete said memoirs, but will never receive credit for writing the book, which is why he is dubbed as a ghost writer.
