Review: ‘Big Miracle’ is a Heartwarming Crowd-Pleaser

Inspired by a true story, Big Miracle recreates a unique event that took place in 1988 Barrow, Alaska where three grey whales were trapped by impenetrable ice in the Artic circle. While it’s nothing to write home about, this family-friendly film displays warm affection for its subject matter without becoming unbearably sentimental or cliched.

Josh Trank’s ‘Chronicle’ A Unique Twist on the ‘Found Footage’ Genre

I think it is safe to call Josh Trank’s sci-fi fantasy, Chronicle a very pleasant surprise. The real-world superhero plot feels like it has been done to death, but watching three high school classmates come to terms with super powers is smart, unique, and technically innovative.

DVD Review: Dream House (2011)

Out in DVD/Blu-Ray today, Dream House is a mixture of mystery, drama and thriller which is more sinister than the title would initially have you believe. Overall I think this film had an interesting premise but the ending got too complicated in itself and was somewhat disappointing.

“Carnage” Is Rip-Roaringly Bleak

The typical lament with stage productions moved to the silver screen is that they are nothing more than “photographed plays.” And this notion at its root, more often than not, is probably correct. In the wake of the bleak but hilarious adaptation of Carnage, I ask: what’s wrong with that?

Musical Numbers Partially Redeem Melodramatic ‘Joyful Noise’

The inner cynic in myself wants to dismantle Joyful Noise for its sheer lack of authenticity, originality, and placid narrative. But there’s a heart to Todd Graff’s third directorial effort that I can’t quite shake. Read my review of the movie after the jump.
