In 2008, Iron Man strayed away from the usual comic superhero formula and became an unexpected worldwide box office smash hit, racking up over $585 million. Aided by a star-reviving performance from the mercurial Robert Downey Jr. as well as some bold risk-taking from the studio, the origin story became an excellent stepping stone for a successful franchise.
