Meek’s Cutoff a Picturesque, Slow-Burning Work of Minimalism

Meek’s Cutoff, a frontier western directed by Kelly Reichhardt (Wendy and Lucy), first played in competition at the 67th Venice International Film Festival and has hit cinemas in 2011. It is a slow-burning, minimalist piece starring Michelle Williams and is based on a historical incident on the Oregon Trail in 1845, in which frontier guide Stephen Meek led a wagon train on an ill-fated journey through the Oregon desert, charting the route known as the Meek Cutoff.
