As a prelude I will simply say this: my favorites of 2012 are undeniably an odd collection but are undeniably also the ones that struck me most, regardless of genre, budget, box office, or critical/audience consensus.
Every Wes Anderson movie in one way or another is about the rivalry between make-believe and the real world and Moonrise Kingdom, tracking a pair of star cross’d pre-teens on the lam on mystical New Penzance Island off the coast of New England in the fall of 1965, is no different.

The first poster for Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom has been released (via Moviefone) and it’s a gorgeous piece of art. The style of the one-sheet reminds me of old book covers for fairy tales as it features the film’s protagonists, Sam and Suzy (Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward), standing in the middle of the woods, tiny little creatures in the overwhelming vastness of nature.
Moonrise Kingdom, Wes Anderson’s return to live-action filmmaking after Fantastic Mr. Fox, is easily one of her most highly anticipated movie of the spring. While the film won’t open until May 25th, Empire has three new images to keep patiently waiting.
