War Movies

NOT UPDATED, OLDER CONTENT!

7. Glory
6. Enemy at the Gates (2001): A highly underrated war movie with an all-star cast featuring Jude Law, Joseph Fiennes, Rachel Weisz and Ed Harris. Enemy at the Gates is the story of a Russian sniper and a German sniper dueling in the backdrop of the pivotal battle of Stalingrad. Despite historical inaccuracies, the movie is still up there as one of the very best WWII movies with awe-inspiring rendering of the devastated battlefield. Do not think this movie is just another movie trying to cash in on the Saving Private Ryan effect and see it!

5. Apocalypse Now (1979): Widely seen as the best war movie of all-time and directed by the master himself, Francis Ford Coppola, Apocalypse Now is one of those movies that cannot be fully comprehended even after multiple watches. Masterful performances, masterful direction, great cinematography and sound editing. This movie goes to the heart of existentialism and more than anything a philosophical study of war and Man. Could be too artsy for some but beautiful movie

4. Letters from Iwo Jima (2006): Directed by Clint Eastwood, this movie is the (much better) counterpart of Flags of our Fathers and tells the other side of the story, the viewpoint of the Japanese soldiers trying to repel the American invasion. An incredible movie that shed some lights on a very obscure part of our History. There is no glory in this movie, no embellishment of warfare, it is dark and sad but shows the humanity that exist everywhere even in the most horrible conditions. Unforgettable movie with unforgettable moments. In my opinion, Clint Eastwood's best movie!
3. Blackhawk Down (2001): Directed by Ridley Scott, Blackhawk Down is the most realistic movie about modern warfare in a urban environment. The movie tells the story of what happened in the street of Mogadishu on that infamous day in 1993 and doesn't burden itself with needless character building scenes. It's a war movie through and through. The movie is beautifully shot, the cast is terrific, and the musical score by Hans Zimmer is first rate as you would expect. One of the best war movies of all-time.
2. The Thin Red Line (1998): The "other" WWII movie of 1998, the Thin Red Line is completely different from Saving Private Ryan because it is more than anything a poetic and philosophical study of war. This movie is probably the most anti-war movie ever made. The men are not fighting for a noble cause, they are only fighting for survival. There isn't much action to speak of, only philosophical images. Also nominated for Best Picture, this movie features breathtaking cinematography, outstanding performances from the likes of Jim Caviezel and Nick Nolte and a great soundtrack by Hans Zimmer. There is no easy answers to the questions this movie rise up and The Thin Red Line is the kind of movie that you either love or hate.
1. Saving Private Ryan (1998): In my opinion, the greatest war movie of all-time. I have seen this movie countless times and I just never get tired of it. There is still little things that you can pick up even after dozens and dozens of views. Aside from reviving the stagnant war movie genre, Saving Private Ryan was fantastic in all aspect of film making: direction, writing, story-telling, casting, acting, cinematography. Everything came together to make the best war movies of all-time.. Enough said.

5. Full Metal Jacket:

7. The Longest Day: Of all movies on this list, I have seen this one the most… by far.

10. Platoon:
